Cast Away – Fly-Fishing & Fishing Adventures at Curdies Inlet, Peterborough

Whether you’re a seasoned angler or simply enjoy casting a line in peaceful surrounds, Curdies Inlet at Peterborough is a hidden gem on Victoria’s southwest coast — especially for those seeking fly-fishing opportunities in a stunning estuarine environment.

Located just a stone’s throw from Peterborough House, Curdies Inlet is where the Curdies River meets the Southern Ocean, creating a calm, shallow system that’s ideal for fly-fishing. The inlet is renowned for its healthy population of estuary perch — a favourite among fly anglers for their strong fights and elusive nature. Casting from the shore, wading the shallows, or launching a small boat or kayak gives you access to prime locations along the banks, reed edges, and deeper pools.

Fly-fishing is most productive during the warmer months (November to April) when water temperatures rise and fish become more active. Early morning and late evening are golden hours for surface action, especially when insects are hatching and baitfish are moving.

But the fishing doesn’t stop with fly rods.

Curdies Inlet also offers excellent bait and lure fishing for a variety of estuarine species. Local favourites include:

  • Bream (black and yellow-eye)

  • Mullet

  • Luderick

  • Salmon (especially after rain when they chase food upriver)

Downstream toward the mouth of the inlet and along the Peterborough coastline, surf fishing becomes a thrilling option. Head to Bay of Martyrs, Worm Bay, or Wild Dog Cove for chances at Australian salmon, trevally, snapper, King George Whiting and the odd gummy shark when conditions are right. The ever-changing beach structure creates holes and gutters that attract fish year-round.

For those with access to a small boat or kayak, trolling and casting lures around the edges of the inlet system offers a productive way to explore. Just be mindful of seasonal closures around spawning times for some species — we’re happy to point you in the right direction.

After a day on the water, Peterborough House provides the perfect base to relax and swap fish tales over a local craft beer or gin. We can help arrange gear storage, early breakfasts for sunrise missions, and even insider tips on where they’re biting.
