Fairy Penguins at London Bridge: A Magical Great Ocean Road Experience

Just a short drive from Peterborough House, London Bridge offers visitors one of the Great Ocean Road’s most memorable wildlife experiences—the chance to see little penguins returning to shore at dusk.

Often affectionately called fairy penguins, little penguins are the smallest penguin species in the world. During the day, they venture out to sea in search of small fish, squid and other marine life. As daylight fades, they gather offshore before cautiously crossing the beach and returning to their sheltered burrows.

London Bridge is one of only two locations within Port Campbell National Park where visitors can regularly witness this nightly ritual. A colony of approximately 80 to 100 little penguins nests on the protected beach beneath the famous rock formation. Although the colony is smaller than the one near the Twelve Apostles, the viewing platforms at London Bridge provide visitors with a wonderfully intimate vantage point.

For the best opportunity to see the penguins, arrive before sunset and allow time to enjoy the spectacular coastal views. The penguins generally begin appearing around 10 to 15 minutes after sunset, with most returning during the following 20 to 30 minutes. Because they are small and the light quickly disappears, binoculars can make the experience even more rewarding. Binoculars may also be available to borrow from the Port Campbell Visitor Information Centre.

Visitors should remain on the designated viewing platforms, keep noise to a minimum and avoid using flash photography. Bright lights can frighten or disorient the penguins, so any torch should be used sparingly and never pointed directly towards the birds. Warm clothing is also recommended, as the exposed clifftop can become cold and windy after sunset—even during summer.

Unlike a commercial penguin parade, the experience at London Bridge is peaceful, natural and unpredictable. You may need a little patience, but seeing these tiny birds emerge from the Southern Ocean and make their way home is well worth the wait.
